image of road bike benefitsEveryone is cycling these days. Road bikes have become a very popular activity. The summer heat might deter you from spending lots of time outside, but you can always keep yourself busy with a road bike. There are a few people who don’t see the benefits of biking but rather fear the exhaustive pedaling when on a road bicycle. However, this activity has lots of mental and health benefits you should explore.

The Mental Health Benefits of Cycling

If you have depression or anxiety, one of the things that your treatment team may have suggested is that you increase your level of activity. This is because being more physically active helps to release positive hormones into your body. One of the ways that you may choose to do this is through cycling.

Although you may think that riding a bicycle is only for little kids and health enthusiasts, the fact is that bicycle riding is increasing in popularity. Not only does it provide a green source of transportation, it is helpful for physical, emotional and mental health. Many cities across the nation have bike paths, with plans for more, as planners are beginning to realize the benefits of a community where cycling is a regular habit.

Easing Depression

Before you decide to use cycling to help you with your anxiety and mood disorders, you need to determine what type of cycling you are interested in doing. This will depend in part on where you live. For instance, if you are in the middle of a flat desert, then mountain biking is probably a poor choice. Learn about the various trails for bicycle enthusiasts in your community so that you can cycle safely.

Talk To A Doctor

Once you know the types of cycling that are done in your area, and have decided which interests you, talk to a naturopath or a traditional doctor first. Have them check things like your blood pressure and overall health to ensure that there is nothing physically standing in your way.

You may also want to discuss your choice with your therapist. However, if you do not have a mental health therapist, you can still reap the rewards of cycling. Consider keeping a journal so that you can note the changes in your physical and emotional state as you continue on your cycling journey.

Safety First

Make sure to get a good bicycle and safety equipment for your cycling endeavor. You can either get one new, or buy one that has been well-maintained. Check with your local social media classifieds or other publications where people in your area are known to advertise used items for sale. You can also look at a bike shop, or even just buy one new. Make sure that your safety equipment meets the state and local standards.

Once you get out on the road or in the mountains on your bicycle, you will notice that you feel more freedom. You will get to breathe fresh air and get your body moving around in nature, which can be quite the exhilarating experience. Not only will you have that extra oxygen and connection with Mother Nature, your body will begin to release mood boosting hormones. You will probably notice an immediate lift in your mood that returns each time you go out on your bike.

Schedule Yourself Slowly

Try to work cycling into your daily schedule at least four times each week. If you can do it daily, even better. Even fifteen to thirty minutes in the morning or at the end of your work day can have significant benefits for your moods. In addition to the other benefits mentioned already, you will also experience a lift in your self-esteem because you are doing something very positive for your body and mind.

There are many benefits from cycling, from an improved sex life to better mental health. If you are interested in finding a way to take care of many of your needs at once, this form of exercise that gets you out in nature should be at the top of your list for fun and health.

It’s My Favorite Exercise

Many readers ask me if I have a favorite type of exercise. I used to be a huge fan of running about 20 years ago, but the wear and tear added up. Sure, running is great, but it’s tougher on your body. Since then, I’ve become obsessed with road bikes. Cycling is a great way to get outdoors (similar to jogging) and explore nature. One of the great things about road bikes is that they make it easier to travel far distances. And no, I’m not opposed to mountain bikes, but I like riding on smooth roads and bike paths. Road biking is much easier on the body, but it doesn’t come without any pain. Some people don’t like the fact they have to sit, and it can hurt their back sides. Trust me, you’ll get used to the slight pain after a few rides. Remember, our goal is to help us feel better and alleviate depression. A little pain in the butt shouldn’t stop you from getting your bike on.

Finding A Cheap Road Bike

Many people get intimidated with road bikes and feel that they will “look stupid.” There are some cyclists out there that don’t like newbies, but most want more people to join their community. When people first get started with road bikes they often struggle to buy their first bike. Find an affordable road bike when you don’t know much about them can prove challenging. To help you get started, we’ve gathered our top road bike resources below. Feel free to send me a message if you have additional questions.

Benefits Of Cycling

Seize The Day

There are lots of people who prefer being lazy all around the summer. Rather than going outdoors and getting sunburned, they would rather stay indoors and binge watch on TV. Sooner or later, you will gain a few pounds and when fall comes around getting them off might be a little harder than expected. So, rather than staying indoors all summer, apply some sunscreen lotion and seize the day on your road bike. You can go biking up hills or just a flat terrain and enjoy the numerous benefits of being outdoors on a hot summer day.

It’s Fun

Biking is lots of fun. There are lots of people who dread many exercises. However, the same can’t be said for biking. Pedaling up or down a mountain is a great way to exercise and burn off a few pounds while having fun in the outdoors. It’s also a great way to keep energized for the rest of the day. Rather than spending a dull morning or evening at the gym with an instructor screaming at you, try biking instead.

The Best Exercise For Your Legs

Running is one of the great exercises, but it always takes a great toll on your legs, especially your feet. However, with biking, you can enjoy the low impact to your feet as the exercise engages the rest of the muscles in the legs. Therefore, it’s a smoother cardio exercise than running that will liven up your spirits.

It’s A Great Way To Get Around

As long as you own a road bike, you can always get around without worrying about the hassles of traffic jams. Rather than slouching around in your car, honking whenever the driver in front of you does something wrong, you can maneuver effortlessly through the long traffic jams using your road bicycle. With this daily routine, you can burn the extra calories in your body and get to work on time every day.

Age Doesn’t Matter

You might be the king of weightlifting right now but a few years down the line, it might be too hard to do so. However, with cycling age doesn’t matter. Anyone can get on a road bicycle and ride down or up the best terrain. Of course, if you are suffering from back injuries or any other related injuries that might affect your cycling, it might be hard. However, if you are in the perfect shape of your life, getting on a bike is the easiest way of losing a few extra pounds.

Biking To Reduce Stress

Are you feeling a little stressed at work? Is your family stressing you? Stress can result in lots of complications in your body you might not be prepared for. Therefore, instead of bottling up everything, you should get on a bike and let the stress go. Pedaling around the block or park will give you lots of energy allowing you to let go of the stress. Whether you take up cycling at a cycling house, buy a dirt bike and ride the rough terrains or simply cycle for charity, it’s a great activity you can enjoy any time of the day.
