The Beginner’s Guide To Buying A Road Bike

More and more people choose to ride a bike instead of driving their car to commute to and from work. This is not only cheaper than driving a vehicle, but also better for your health. By switching from car to a bike you can save money while staying fit and healthy at the same time, so it’s worth considering this as a viable option.

If you made this decision, the first thing to do as a beginner is to buy a road bike. This may seem easy, but when you start looking into all possible options, you can see it’s rather complex, as there are many categories of bikes and hundreds of brands and models to choose from.

Your biggest challenge is to pick a road bike that gives you comfort and efficiency while riding it, without breaking your bank account. There are so many road bikes, in so many price categories, that you should start your search from setting your budget limits.

It’s a good idea to choose them over unknown manufacturers, as a reputable brand is usually going to provide you a better customer service than some manufacturer in China. Besides, your bike is going to need spare parts at some point in time, so it’s much better to choose a model manufactured here.

It’s a good idea to restrict your final shortlist to 3-4 models of bikes, and then look for reviews to see what other users think of them. You have to take care because there are many types of bikes, and not all of them are road bikes. For instance, if you buy a mountain bike, you can use it on mountain trails and off road. But riding it to and from work on a normal road isn’t going to be the best experience of all. Besides, you are going to pay extra for certain options and features you don’t need when riding your bike only on asphalt roads.

If price is very important for you, you may want to look into the option of getting a used bike. However, this is always tricky because you never know whether it is in good condition or not, especially when you are a beginner. This is why it’s probably better to buy your first road bike new.

If you make a thorough comparison of all bike models on your short list and you choose the one that suits best your needs, you are going to have a reliable vehicle. It’s worth paying a little more in the beginning because you are going to save even more money by not having to buy so much car fuel on a long term. Besides, your car maintenance and repair costs are also going to be lower, as you won’t be using your car that much anymore.
